India's first Cyclothon led by Salman Khan

Today in Mumbai, Salman Khan led India’s first ever international cycling event, “Mumbai Cyclothon-Tour De Mumbai.

The Bollywood city was a witness to the biggest star studded event since morning.

Salman was there to lead the whole line up of cyclists to rev up the show. A huge crowd lined up to see the cyclists on the Bandra Reclamation street.

Starry cyclothon
There were cycling professionals from across the world who took part in the event for a cause. It was Salman Khan’s Being Human-Tour De Human event to promote conservation of nonrenewable resources of energy like petrol and environment.

It was on January 19, 2010, that the ‘Wanted’ boy actor had signed on the joint venture between Sport 18.

Sports 18 is a sports marketing division of the Network18 group and ID Sports – a sports management company had joined hands with TI Cycles and the Being Human – the Salman Khan Foundation.

The participants
The enthusiastic crowd consisted of people from all walks of life. Amateur cyclists, cycling avid, working professionals, house wives and school children, all were present.

There were many officials of important ranks in the event. A presence of a host of celebrities, officials from CFI, Maharashtra Cycling Association and corporate was an added boost.

The professional race
Being Human’s Tour de Mumbai was an international race which was mobilized after the approval of the International Cycling Union (UCI).

There were a total 14 professional cycling teams competing with each other. Each world standard team was present along with the Indian national cycling team.

Expert guidance by John Gloster and Victor Popov, five-time official physio of Tour De France and consultant physio to the Australian Cricket Team for medical vigilance was provided.

“We aim to help put Mumbai on the international cycling map as well as contribute to a healthier and greener environment through the BSA Hercules India Cyclothon, Mumbai-2010,” Dr. Raghuram, President, TI Cycles said.

Salman Khan: The Mumbai Cyclothon Enthusiast!

It was a day of spreading the message of going green and burning fat not fuel at the Mumbai cyclothon on Sunday the 21st of Feb’10. The event was a big one as Salman Khan was there to promote the love for cycling. The actor is a regular cyclist these days as many a common man has seen him cycling from his residence Galaxy Apartments in Mumbai to Film city in Goregaon where he goes for shoots.

Salman is known to be a great fan of this manual machine as he literally seems to fly while riding one. According to sources he manages to reach his work place in flat 54 minutes compared to the hours of traffic jams and signals one has to face while traveling by car. The Mumbai cyclothon was organized by The BSA Hercules India cyclothon and Salman Khan’s organization Being Human. According to close sources there were two categories where the first was for all citizens and the second one was for the cycling professionals from across the world.

The event saw almost 7000 participants with 6000 children and even the famous dabbawalas who came in huge numbers to participate in the go green event. The route for the cyclothon was across the Bandra Worli Sea Link which was one major cause of such vast participation There were many enthusiastic people who enjoyed the event but many also complained of a little harassment due to unclear directions charted out for the route of the cyclothon.

However the event was a major success with everyone from the film stars to the common man raced across Bandra’s Carter Road in Mumbai to enjoy a pollution free ride on a pleasant Sunday morning. There were many who were pleading for a separate lane for cyclists to be built in Mumbai so that the fuel free vehicle would come back with a bang. Well, all we can say that ‘Better Late Than Never’!
