The dishonest cop with a heart of gold played by Salman in his new release Dabangg - meaning powerful and fearless - has received rave reviews in Nepal where the film was released on Friday in nine of the most prominent theatres across the nation.

At the minimum, Dabangg is a super hit and it has to be seen if it goes on to gain a blockbuster status for itself. First time producer Arbaaz Khan has smashed box office in a big way and though as of now celebrations are still within the Khan family, there could be bigger things planned in the coming days. As congratulatory messages continue to pour in, Arbaaz Khan talks to Joginder Tuteja on what really transpired during the making of Dabangg.
The Salman factor Once the script of Dabangg went through Salman, it did see changes. When a huge star comes on board, you have to go with his image and his taste had to be taken into consideration. So yes, Salman has contributed to the script. Change is not bad and it was only making the film look better.
A satisfied lead protagonist We had to keep Salman satisfied because as a producer, I didn't want an actor who was not comfortable with his role or the film. I had to allow him to do things his way because he comes with a relevant experience. This is the reason why he was the one who approved the script. Sometimes when the narrative becomes uninteresting, you plan certain things in a way that it all becomes interesting again. It is an evolving process. Salman didn't sleepwalk through Dabangg and really elevated it due to his commitment.
Didn't the change disturb the flow? As producer, director and actor, we had made a promise to each other that everyone would contribute to the film. In fact we spent an entire year working on it before it went on floors. We concentrated on the look and graph of the film a lot. In fact even till the stage of editing, we were working on the creative aspects. It's not right to always think that just because your script is locked, you can't modify it.
Was the director convinced too? As a newcomer, every individual needs help and the confidence to do it all independently only goes up after 3, 4 or 5 films. People don't know it all in the first film. Abhinav (Kashyap) was lucky that we came from a film background and hence all suggestions which were there were for the better. He knew that he was in right hands. He was comfortable with the changes in script since the basic film was made out of what he brought on table as writer.
No fuss whatsoever? Fortunately, he understood that we are working with Salman who is a big star and knows his job. He never whined that 'nahi yaar, yeh scene maine ek saal pehle likha tha toh isse aise hi rehne do'. He knew that the time had changed since he wrote the first draft of Dabangg and hence change was inevitable. DABANGG is on a rampage, shattering all past records that come in its path! The film is setting new records and ranks amongst the biggest openers ever. Of course, the Wednesday and Thursday figures will decide where it stands vis-a-vis the first week business of 3 IDIOTS. But as thing stand today, if the film continues to perform the way it's performing, the first week share from India theatrical alone of DABANGG will be anywhere between Rs. 48 cr. to Rs. 50 cr. The rentals at single screens are very low and since the business at single screens is humungous, the distributors' share from single screens will be unprecedented.

Salman Khan starrer Dabangg roared at the box office as it opened to a first day net collection of a whopping Rs 14.40 crore - the highest till date at the box office.
The movie directed by Abhinav Kashyap starring Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha has set a new benchmark. As per official sources, the film has now created a record for earning Rs 48 crore, which is a whopping Rs 6 crore more than 3 Idiots, that had collected Rs 41 crore in the opening weekend.
Trade analyst and critic Taran Adarsh said, "Salman fans, rejoice! You walk into Dabangg with 100 per cent expectations and you exit with 200 per cent ratification. Entertainment guaranteed. This film will create a pandemonium of sorts, a mass hysteria, crushing old records and setting new benchmarks at the box-office."
The festive season and inimitable star power of the lead actor had audiences queuing outside cinema halls all over the country. The movie grossed Rs 15.75 crore on the second day at the box office.
Confirms trade analyst Amod Mehra, "Yes, Dabangg has surpassed the opening collections of 3 Idiots."
While the movie opened to almost 97 per cent occupancy at single screen theatres, it ran into packed houses in several multiplexes across the country, proving yet again that Salman Khan is the darling of the masses.
Dabangg has also surpassed Salman's previous film records in the Gulf, US, UK (£332,673), North America ( $628,317), and with 14 prints, it grossed $80,000 in Australia on Friday alone making Dabangg Salman's biggest hit overseas.

If he reaches the top position, that crown would sit uncomfortably on his head. Salman Khan has always maintained through his attitude, work or his demeanour that he didn’t care for any positions or titles. But looks like even the otherwise brattish Khan has ended up with something that he hadn’t accounted for. Dabangg has created such records that it might just end up being the most successful films in Salman Khan’s career.
But if you see closely this success didn’t happen with a bang in Salman’s life, as it would seem like. It was just the fitting finale to a slow reel that had been unspooling for a while now. A while since Salman Khan altered his own policies of privacy and changed his attitude towards the media. For decades, Salman hid behind a rough, aggressive mask, shooing away photographers, taking digs at journalists and generally trying to portray this I-don’t-care-a-damn image. Even though few of his close friends sang paeans of praise in his glory, Salman never bothered to explain or justify any of his actions. Take me or leave me, was his stance and as expected, he was left more than taken.
And one fine day, as dramatically as it would get, he turned over a new leaf. Some say it was his experience in jail after the black buck incident that made Salman realise that he will need support at some point or other. Some say it was his pleasant experience with interacting with various people in Dus Ka Dum that made him come out of his shell. Whatever the reason, the man came out and shone. He dropped that mask to show an absolutely endearing personality. He showed that he could laugh and cry with you, if he felt for you. He was never the star, he was just a stud who was perhaps a little smarter, funnier and of course better looking than your average Joe.
Trade pundits like Amod Mehra think that this humongous hit has finally made Salman a superstar. Mehra says, “ He has jumped to the number 2 position, pushing SRK to 3rd position. Salman has risen like a phoenix after two miserable duds, Veer and Main Aur Mrs Khanna.”
“It is obvious by now that people just love Salman the way he is. Whenever he has played a brattish role, like in Tere Naam, Wanted or Dabangg, its been accepted very well. The man is no actor but his star power is fantastic.”
Film-maker Subhash Ghai who not long ago worked with Salman, says "Salman is the coolest star I have met. He is never affected by his superhits or flops...He has been here for 22 years. His love and respect for film-makers remains the same, if they have given him blockbusters or flops. He values good human beings, himself being one. I love him for that."
However, ad gurus are still not convinced if brand Salman can really oust brand Shah Rukh Khan. Prahlad Kakkar, Adman, says, “For the longest time SRK has enjoyed the greatest brand value among all the three Khans and strangely enough continues to do so. But currently Salman Khan is big but he doesn’t not take too much on his plate and nor does Aamir. In fact, I strongly believe that advertisers have not positioned Salman right. He has this ‘bad boy’ appeal. And he is extremely popular among women. But this image has not been used properly by the ad guys.” Prasoon Pandey, ad filmmaker, says “It is difficult to rank who has bigger brand value among the three Khans. I think that the brand which will opt for Aamir may not opt for Salman. But SRK is demanded by brands from a wide spectrum. As he is the one who is loved by people across all ages. Even when it comes to movies, SRK is still a more popular star so ad world is a direct rub off of what happens in the movie industry. But we can’t deny the fact that Salman at present is on top of everybody’s mind, thanks to Dabangg Sumanto Chattopadhyay, Executive Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather, says, “I will have to say that SRK is the biggest amongst the three Khans. SRK has enjoyed this position for long and I guess will continue to do so, as he has a wider audience acceptance. Salman seems to be more popular among youngsters and women. And also right now, Salman is doing better. But I guess post the Dabangg fever, SRK will be back to number one."

DABANGG continues to perform well on weekdays as well. The film collected approx. Rs. 3.15 cr. on Monday, taking the 10-day total to approx. Rs. 107.65 cr. nett. With ANJAANA ANJAANI getting pushed ahead by one week, the DABANGG wave is expected to spill over to the third weekend as well.
DABANGG continues to dominate international box-office. The film is faring very well in U.K., America and Australia, the key markets. The 10-day total from these three markets alone is approx. Rs. 10.12 crores. Considering the genre of the film [action], the business is excellent.

A few weeks back many in the industry looked at Salman Khan as a single screen star as his films like Wanted and Veer had opened well at single screens but not multiplexes. Most in the industry thought that it is Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan films likely to put up the big opening numbers as these stars have had big openers at multiplexes but one Dabangg changes all equations.
Now many in the trade see Salman Khan as the top star as others may put up Dabangg numbers in multiplexes but can anyone challenge the Dabangg numbers at single screens. Dabangg put up a 18 crore share just from single screens over its first weekend which is more than the lifetime single screen share for most big films.
The difference between Three Idiots opening and Dabangg is mainly single screens, the multiplex business of both films is similar. The two films in the next 6-9 months expected to challenge the Dabangg opening are Tees Maar Khan and Ra1 and with big superstars at the helm and likely huge hype and promotion the multiplex numbers are going to be extraordinary for both films but it will be the single screen business which will determine if they can get close or surpass the Dabangg opening.
Salman Khan next few starrers like Ready, Bodyguard and Kick will be extremely hot in the market as the movies cater to Salman’s huge mass following.
